Solar Pigeon Proofing A Professional Guide

Solar pigeon proofing is not a cheap installation, so it is important to ensure the work is carried out correctly the first time. Poorly installed mesh systems can fail, allow pigeons and pests back under the panels, damage your roof or solar system, and in some cases even affect the manufacturer’s warranty. A professionally installed system should provide long-term protection while maintaining the appearance and performance of your solar panels.

One of the most important things to understand is that solar pigeon proofing should never involve drilling or screwing directly into the solar panels or frames. This can damage the system and may invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty. Professional installers should always use proper solar panel clips designed specifically for solar pigeon proofing. These clips should be UV-stabilised or stainless steel and designed to securely attach to the panel frame without causing any damage.

The type of mesh used is also extremely important. Proper solar pigeon proofing mesh should be either plastic-coated galvanised steel, hot-dipped galvanised steel, or stainless steel. In our experience, plastic-coated mesh is often the most durable and visually discreet option, although all professional-grade solar mesh systems can perform well when installed correctly. The gauge of the wire also matters. A 19-gauge mesh may be suitable for pigeon-only protection, however for squirrels and rodents a stronger 16-gauge mesh is generally considered the industry standard as it cannot easily be bent or damaged.

The aperture size of the mesh should also be carefully selected. For pigeon proofing, a 12.5 mm x 25 mm mesh is commonly used as it still allows excellent airflow beneath the solar panels. Where squirrels or smaller rodents are present, a smaller aperture may be required to prevent pests from squeezing through gaps.

The environment around the property should also be considered when choosing materials. Hot-dipped galvanised steel is a cost-effective and commonly used option with good durability. PVC-coated galvanised mesh provides additional rust protection along with a discreet matte black finish. Stainless steel offers the highest corrosion resistance and is particularly recommended for coastal or high-salt environments where rust protection is especially important.

Correct installation is just as important as the materials themselves. Solar clips should generally be installed at approximately 450 mm intervals around the solar array to prevent birds or rodents from forcing their way behind the mesh. The bottom edge of the mesh should also be bent outward at roughly a 30 to 45-degree angle to create what is commonly known as a “kick-out.” This allows the mesh to sit tightly against the roof tiles and helps prevent pigeons from gaining access underneath the system. On some roof tile profiles, the mesh may also require trimming carefully to follow the shape of the tiles and remove any potential gaps.

Another very important consideration is ensuring the mesh does not protrude above the edge of the solar panels. If the mesh sits too high, it can create shading on the panels which may lead to hot spots or “shade burn.” Over time this can reduce efficiency and potentially damage the solar cells. A properly installed system should sit neatly below the edge of the panels while maintaining a clean and discreet appearance.

Achieving a professional finish also requires care during installation. Working one side at a time helps avoid kinks or bends in the mesh and results in a tighter, cleaner fit. Corners where two lengths meet should be trimmed neatly and securely folded together to lock the sections in place. Additional ties may sometimes be used for extra reinforcement where required. Most importantly, there should never be gaps or openings where pigeons or pests can enter.

Solar pigeon proofing is far more than simply attaching mesh around solar panels. A proper installation requires the correct materials, proper fitting methods, knowledge of solar systems, and attention to airflow, shading, and pest-proof detailing. We always recommend using an experienced installer who specialises in solar pigeon proofing and provides a genuine workmanship warranty.

At Solar Pigeon Proofing Service, we provide professional solar pigeon proofing installations using high-quality materials and non-invasive fixing methods designed to protect both your roof and your solar panels. All of our installations come with a 5-year warranty on materials and workmanship for complete peace of mind.

The Problems Caused by Pigeons Under Solar Panels

Solar panels create the perfect environment for pigeons to nest beneath. The sheltered gap underneath the panels provides warmth, protection from predators, and cover from poor weather, making it an ideal nesting area for birds and other pests. Unfortunately, once pigeons move under solar panels, they can create a range of serious problems for both the property and the solar system itself.

Noise & Disturbance

One of the first things homeowners usually notice is the constant noise caused by pigeons nesting beneath the panels. Pigeons can be extremely noisy throughout the day, especially early in the morning. Scratching, cooing, flapping, and movement underneath the roof can quickly become a major nuisance for both homeowners and neighbours. As more birds begin nesting beneath the system, the noise often becomes worse due to fighting birds, chicks, and constant movement under the panels.

Large Build-Up of Droppings

Pigeon droppings are one of the biggest issues associated with birds nesting under solar panels. Over time, droppings can build up heavily across roof tiles, gutters, conservatories, patios, driveways, and surrounding areas. This not only looks unsightly but can also cause long-term damage. Pigeon droppings are highly acidic and can stain or damage roof tiles, guttering, paintwork, conservatories, vehicles, and outdoor furniture. Large amounts of droppings can also create strong unpleasant odours around the property.

Blocked Gutters & Drainage Problems

Pigeons regularly bring nesting materials such as twigs, feathers, moss, and rubbish underneath solar panels. Over time, these materials can wash into gutters and downpipes, causing blockages and drainage issues. Blocked gutters can lead to overflowing water, damp problems, roof leaks, and damage to fascias and soffits. If left untreated, this can become an expensive maintenance issue and may even lead to internal water damage.

Damage to Solar Panel Wiring

One of the most serious problems caused by pigeons and other pests beneath solar panels is damage to electrical wiring. Birds and rodents can peck at or chew cables located beneath the panels. Damaged wiring can reduce solar panel performance, trigger electrical faults, or even shut the system down entirely. In severe cases, damaged wiring may also increase the risk of electrical fires and costly repairs.

Reduced Solar Panel Efficiency

A build-up of bird droppings, nesting debris, feathers, and dirt can affect the efficiency of the solar panels. Droppings and debris may partially shade areas of the panels, reducing their ability to generate electricity efficiently. In some cases, prolonged shading can contribute to hot spots or “shade burn,” which may damage the solar cells over time and reduce the lifespan of the system.

Roof Damage

As pigeons move repeatedly across the roof and continue nesting beneath the panels, damage can occur to roof tiles and surrounding roofing materials. Nesting materials can trap moisture beneath the panels, contributing to long-term wear and deterioration. On older roofs, constant pigeon activity may dislodge tiles or expose weak areas that eventually lead to leaks or further roofing issues.

Health Risks

Pigeons and their droppings can carry bacteria, parasites, mites, and airborne fungal spores which may pose health risks to humans and pets. Large infestations can also attract bird mites, fleas, insects, and rodents. When dried droppings are disturbed during cleaning or maintenance, harmful dust particles may become airborne and create additional health concerns.

Attracting More Pests

Once pigeons establish a nesting area under solar panels, the problem often becomes worse over time. Nesting sites attract more pigeons year after year and can also encourage squirrels and rodents to access the roof space. Without proper proofing, a small issue can quickly develop into a much larger infestation.

Damage to Property Appearance

Heavy pigeon activity can significantly affect the appearance of a property. Droppings across roofs, conservatories, patios, walls, and driveways can make a home appear dirty and poorly maintained. This can be particularly frustrating for homeowners who have invested heavily in solar panels to improve the appearance and value of their property.

Why Solar Pigeon Proofing Is Important

Professional solar pigeon proofing prevents birds and pests from gaining access beneath the panels while helping protect the solar system, roof, and property from long-term damage. A properly installed solar mesh system helps maintain solar panel efficiency, prevents nesting, protects wiring, reduces noise, prevents gutter blockages, and keeps the property clean and protected.

The key is ensuring the system is installed professionally using proper solar mesh and non-invasive solar clips that do not damage the panels or invalidate warranties.

At Solar Pigeon Proofing Service, we specialise in professional solar pigeon proofing installations using high-quality materials and secure fixing methods designed specifically for solar panel systems. All of our installations come with a 5-year warranty on materials and workmanship for complete peace of mind.

I contacted Solar Pigeon Proofing Service after pigeons started nesting under my solar panels making an absolute mess of the roof and gutters. From the first call for a free quote, the service was spot on.

They arrived on time, were very professional, and explained exactly what the problem was and how they’d fix it. The team installed steel mesh pigeon proofing with no drilling, which was a big relief as I didn’t want any damage to my panels or roof. They also removed all the droppings and cleaned the gutters as part of the job.
